A Pure Connection, a poem

Writer's picture: Julie EwigJulie Ewig

At my core, I love to write. I guess it makes sense for me to have a blog then, huh? I've never considered myself a poet. In reality, when we studied poetry in school it was always my least favorite topic. I think I wasn't at the point of appreciating the emotion of the words when I was younger. Now, I find myself being pulled towards the short, emotional concept of poetry.

While I was earning my degree in English, I took a creative writing class (shocker). One of the poems I wrote for the class was in honor - now in loving memory - of our first dog, Buddy. He was my best friend, and I can't think of a better way of honoring his memory forever than putting this poem out into the world. Please enjoy, A Pure Connection.

A Pure Connection

Black coat the color of night

Soulful eyes are deep, dark brown

The love between them brings each being much light

An undissolvable bond one cannot drown

Enjoying the company on long evening strolls around the town

A cloudless sky before them is enough to fill up a heart

A connection like this cannot be put down

Only upon death will they part

A cold, loud room is where their love did start

A connection of the eyes and he became the one

With a relationship like a work of art

In one instant they search was done

She could finally emerge from her depressing fog

For there is no relationship like the one between this girl and her dog

In loving memory of Buddy

There’s something special about the way best friends just get each other. The inside jokes, the late-night talks, the shared glances that say everything without a word. But even the strongest friendships have layers waiting to be uncovered—stories untold, perspectives unexplored, and memories yet to be made.

Some of my favorite moments with my closest friends haven’t been the big milestones but the unexpected, deep conversations that came out of nowhere. The “What if?” scenarios that made us laugh until we cried. The “Remember when?” stories that took us back to who we were years ago. The “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” questions that made us pause and really think.

Making space for these kinds of talks…
